Beware of Card Fraud
Don't Be a Victim
Ventura County police are reporting an increase in credit and especially debit card fraud cases. Thieves are using "skimmers" to steal Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and other confidential information from the card's magnetic strip, which can then be cloned and used to access a person's account. So what can you do?
- First, CBC has always recommended that when you use your debit card, and can choose between "debit" or "credit" at a retailer, always use the "credit" option. A debit transaction is one that uses your PIN number; a credit transaction is one that requires your signature. Signing for your purchase adds a measure of security you can't get by providing your PIN.
- More paper = more problems. Opt to receive electronic statements. If you need help to set up your account to receive eStatements, please call us.
- Pay your bills electronically. It is safer than using unsecure mail slots.
- Monitor all your financial statements carefully. Do not leave cards or receipts lying around. NEVER throw statements or other sensitive information in the trash. Always shred it.
